OK, so choosing a major is not exactly like choosing your next meal, but if you think about it, there are similarities. Some people choose a meal based on what lies ahead—going on a long bike ride? Load up on carbs. Looking ahead to a specific career? Find the major that will prepare you with the necessary skills and information.
Some people choose a meal because, regardless of what they’ll be doing afterward, they know they’re going to love every last bite. Some students choose majors based on the likelihood that they will enjoy every last class—give or take.
Is one approach toward choosing a major better than the other? Not if both choices are based on thoughtful consideration of interests, strengths, and personal goals. If you’ve identified a career you want to pursue, then do some research to see which major(s) will get you fueled and ready to go. If you’ve identified a major you can really sink your teeth into, then start exploring careers that will draw on the skills and knowledge you’re gaining.
You know what you like and don’t like when it comes to eating, so, just as you scrutinize the menu for the most pleasing entrée, read the UA catalog for the major that suits you best. After all, a major is going to take much longer to digest than one meal. If you have narrowed the list of majors and are still unsure, we (Career Center consultants) will be glad to talk with you. Meal not included :)
